Stemming
Reducing words to a root form so «running» matches «run».
Stemming normalizes word forms at index and query time: plurals, cases and verb forms collapse to a shared root. Without it, «shoes» and «shoe» are different terms, and heavily inflected languages like Russian explode into hundreds of surface forms.
Language-aware stemmers are configured per collection, and a stemming dictionary handles irregular cases that the algorithmic stemmer gets wrong.
